When main contractors Morgan Sindall appointed White Horse Contractors as subcontractors for the five-a-side pitches at Basildon Sporting Village in Essex, they required a water attenuation scheme that would reduce the risk of flooding on outdoor pitches. Recommended by builder’s merchants, Wolseley, 650m3 of Marley Plumbing and Drainage’s Waterloc250 cells were installed beneath six five-a-side astro-turf football pitches.

An attenuation system was required beneath the football pitches to diminish the risk of flooding - a risk that’s elevated with the addition of each facility. The issue, of course, was particularly relevant in this case because the site would combine an existing pitch, a new pitch and a stadium.

When Nick Coleman, Estimator at White Horse Contractors, consulted Peter Young, Key Account Manager at Wolseley, for advice on the best supplier for the job, he suggested Marley Plumbing & Drainage. “Marley’s Waterloc250 product was perfect for the job while being competitively priced.” Peter Young explains.

Waterloc250 offers a sustainable and effective method of dealing with stormwater run-off. 96% of the cell volume is available to store water, minimising the plan area or depth needed for the installation. It also allows for quick installation in layers, producing a secure tank, which can be configured to suit the area available.

Revealing the other considerations involved when specifying, Peter Young adds: “Marley’s ability to offer an outstanding technical support service, high level expertise and guidance was key.”

Nick Coleman, of White Horse Contractors agrees: “The technical team at Marley were extremely helpful and showed a high level of technical understanding. With the advantage of their expert advice, we chose the Waterloc250 attenuation system.

“This product was ideal for the job because it has the capacity to store water, and let it go back into the system at a slower rate, significantly reducing the amount of water that is being released at any time. It was also cost effective and showed best value.”

The Waterloc250 design is optimised to reduce waste; for transport and storage, the system’s modular cells can be nested, resulting in significant transportation savings, plus an associated reduction in carbon emissions and the amount of packaging needed. Shane adds: “Once on site, the delivery pallet could actually be reconfigured and incorporated into the system.”

Delighted with the swiftness of the installation process for the strong, yet lightweight cells, which was complete within just four days, Shane Heffer remarks: “Marley was very thorough in explaining how to put the system together and complete the installation, this was a big bonus and helped the Whitehorse Contractors team.”
