Gutter size and type

Generally, if an existing gutter is being replaced, choose one which is the same size or slightly larger.

If the project is new build, the following factors should be taken into account when selecting the right gutter:

  • The size of gutter you need and it’s flow capacity
The larger the gutter - the greater the capacity – the larger roof area it will be able to drain
  • Whether the gutter is fitted level or to a fall (horizontal or higher at one end than the other)
Gutter can be fitted level or to a fall of up to 1:600 or 10mm for every 6 metres.
  • If the gutter outlet is at one end or in the centre of the gutter length
A centre outlet is more efficient than an end outlet.
  • The length of gutter to an outlet/downpipe.
More outlets mean more efficient drainage, however this is dependent on the number of connections to drain available.
