Roof drainage design

To access the suitability of a gutter system to drain a roof, the following factors need to be taken into consideration:

• The effective roof area to be drained
• Rainfall intensity
• The flow characteristics of the gutter system
• The number and position of downpipes

Gutter selection

Aesthetics are of course important, however the following factors can also influence the final choice of system:

• The size of gutter and it’s flow capacity
• Whether the gutter is fitted level or to a fall
• If the outlet is positioned in the centre or at the end of a run
• The length of gutter to an outlet/downpipe
