Golden finish for the Golf Classic

05 November 2009

Winners Garry and Phillip Cox with Fiona Bashford, Marley Plumbing & Drainage

The Grand Final of the Golf Classic 2009 took place amidst glorious sunshine and stunning Welsh scenery at the Celtic Manor Resort on Sunday 27th September.

Playing on the Montgomerie Course, designed by golfing legend Colin Montgomerie, 14 teams competed for the title. Celtic Manor Resort will also be hosting the Ryder Cup in 2010, and Finalists took the opportunity to soak up some of the competitive atmosphere at this prestigious venue.

The Grand Final is the culmination of six rounds of golf played by over 1500 golfers across the UK. This year's Finalists came from a wide variety of construction professions including general builders and contractors, roofers, plumbers and scaffolders, as well as specifiers. The competition was fierce with almost all teams scoring par or better. The winning team, Garry Cox of Torpoint Ltd, and his brother Philip Cox of CWW Builders, scored an outstanding 45 points. Cliff Beauchamp, Abbey Roofing Contractors, and his partner Richard Poore, 1st Choice Scaffold (Oxford) Ltd, claimed the runners-up place after a count-back with two other teams, all having scored 43 points.

Garry Cox was delighted with the replica Claret Jug trophy he received from Fiona Bashford, Marketing Communications Manager, Marley Plumbing & Drainage and was full of praise for the organisers: "Everything was so well organised and we were very well looked after. Celtic Manor is a magnificent venue and the Montgomerie course was fantastic, although the 3rd hole was a frighteningly long par 5! The scenery from some of the holes was amazing and the whole event was an unforgettable experience."

There were also prizes for the Longest Drive on the 9th hole, which went to Neil Jackson of Jackson Builders, and Nearest the Pin on the 15th, which was won by Richard Poore.

A separate competition was held for the sponsors of the Golf Classic, also played on the Montgomerie Course. The team from Hamerville Magazines, including Dave Jones, David Ventris-Field, Lee Manton and Mark Hudson, took the top prize with a combined score of 88 points. David Ventris-Field was delighted with the win: "We had a fantastic day; the course played well, and the organisation of the event overall was spot on. Our customers had a great time and we have to thank the organisers for arranging such a professional, enjoyable event."

The Golf Classic will be 18 years old in 2010 so if you work within the construction industry and would like to join the fun, please call the organisers, Mainspring Marketing, on 01892 752300 or visit www.thegolfclassic.co.uk to learn more and register.
