The increase in flooding and climate change demands a different approach to stormwater management...

"The increase in flooding and climate change demands a different approach to stormwater management. As the areas of permeable land where rainwater can soak away are diminishing due to our increasingly built environment, it’s essential we manage rainwater responsibly and look to more sustainable options," comments Tony Calton, Technical Manager at Marley Plumbing and Drainage.

With more than 300 people still living in temporary accommodation following the heavy flooding in South Yorkshire, and some warned that it could be months before they are allowed to return home, it is clear flooding has devastating consequences. Firefighters from 26 services across the UK have been removing 346million litres of water a day as part of the emergency operation, and three severe flood warnings remain in place in the area.

In response to the latest floods the Government announced a 25% increase in spending on flood defences, from £600m this year to £800m by 2011. Mr. Calton continues: "As well as flood defences, other preventative methods need to be implemented. Sustainable Drainage Systems, which replicate natural drainage patterns, keep rainwater on site longer and control run off, and therefore help reduce the risk of flooding."
