Thermal movement and jointing
A 3m length of PVCu pipe will increase in length by approximately 3.6mm when subjected to a 20°C temperature variation. Therefore it is important to ensure that any movement is controlled and ring seal joints are installed to accommodate any expansion.
Ring seal soil (push fit) jointing

1. Cut the pipe square, using a hacksaw or similar. A pipe clip or sheet of paper can be used to provide a square edge.

2. Chamfer the end of the pipe using a file or rasp. Factory cut pipe ends are already chamfered.

3. Remove swarf from the end of the pipe.

4. Check that the ring seal is in position in the housing at the end of the fitting (branch, bend, connector etc).

5. Push the pipe fully home and mark the position of the end of the fitting socket on the pipe.

6. Withdraw the pipe by 10mm. This allows for expansion. Make sure the soil stack is adequately supported with the appropriate pipe clip.
Solvent weld soil jointing

4. Apply a liberal coat of solvent cement to both surfaces.

5. Immediately insert the pipe into the fitting with a twisting motion.

6. Clean off any excess solvent cement. N.B. It is important to allow for expansion at each floor level.
