Considerations

The recommended method of design is to use 'limit state' design with partial factors for safety applied to the loads and material properties. CIRIA report C609 recommends this approach.

1. The ultimate limit state - the strength of the unit is exceeded by the applied loads and the tank collapses.
2. The serviceability limit state - Deflections are not excessive and do not cause damage to the overlying surfaces or cause a significant reduction in the storage volume of the tanks. This will also include a consideration of long term creep testing.
