With unpredictable weather patterns wreaking havoc on the country’s water supply and utility companies ramping up costs, it’s no wonder rainwater harvesting systems are becoming increasingly popular. Marley Plumbing & Drainage sets out an overview for installing its kits.

The Marley rainwater systems are available in two
versions:
USW100: Garden irrigation. The controls and hose tap are wall
mounted and can be situated up to 17 metres from the installation.
Pipework and power connections are made to the pump via a service
duct to the inlet chamber, which provides access to the tank.
USW200: Garden use and domestic back-up. This kit is constructed in the same way as above, but is additionally connected to a storage tank, situated in the loft, to provide a supplementary water supply for non-potable applications (i.e. toilet flushing). A mains water supply back-up is required in case of power failure or the depletion of the recycled water.
The kits are provided with or without an infiltration (soakaway) facility. If the version with a built in soakaway is installed, it must be located a minimum distance of 5m from any building boundary in accordance with Building Regulations.
Site preparation
1. The system is constructed from three layers of Marley Waterloc
cells requiring an excavation plan area of 2.4m x 1.8m, minimum
depth of 2.15m allowing 100mm for the base of course sand. An
allowance of approx 150-200mm around the perimeter is required for
backfilling with course granular material.

2. Line the bottom and sides with the geotextile material supplied,
one strip lengthways, one widthways, with the excess material on
each side of the excavation, allowing an equal overlap all round.
Lay tank liner out installing the 1st layer of Waterloc HD cells
(black), leaving the centre vacant for the bottom housing and riser
sections.

3. The edges should abut and corners align with each other. Lock
together at intersecting corners with connectors, fitted ‘back to
back', the connectors secure adjacent cells or are used between
layers - connectors should not to be fitted to the underside of the
1st cell layer.

4. Install the 2nd layer of Waterloc cells, pull tank liner and
geotextile taut, backfilling to within 150mm of the upper cell
surface. If a soakaway top layer of cells is required, the cells
are laid over the tank liner, but still wrapped in the
geo-textile.

5. Fit the inlet chamber into the adapter tray firmly, cutting the
closed ends of the water supply and service pipe spigots on the
inlet chamber to suit the required size of pipe. Cut and form the
geotextile up around the sides of the chamber, ensuring no gaps
before backfilling to approx 150mm over the cells.
Pump installation
6. Assemble float switch to mounting bracket of the pump. Apply a
few turns of thread tape to 25mm hose adaptor and fit to the outlet
of the pump, securing with a hose clip. Tie the pump withdrawal
cord to the eyelet and lower into the well.
Controls
7. Control units are supplied pre-wired, requiring only a final
connection to be made to a 240V power supply. However these
electrical connections must be made by a qualified electrician.
